One Rule That Protects Your Home And Your Holiday

We get this question every fall, usually from a homeowner in Bourbonnais or Manteno who has three tubs of lights in the garage and a roof they would rather not climb. It is a fair question and it deserves a straight answer instead of a policy line.

Here is the honest version. We tried it the other way early on, and the same thing happened every time. A crew spends an hour untangling a strand that shorts out in week two. The homeowner calls, understandably frustrated, and now there is a debate about whether the failure was the lights or the install. Nobody wins that conversation. So we made the call that most established holiday lighting companies make. We supply the lights, we own the outcome, and there is nothing to argue about in December.

1. We cannot warranty a product we did not buy

Every Green Pro display carries a season long guarantee. If a bulb goes dark or a run comes loose between installation and New Year's, we come back and fix it at no charge. That promise only works because we know exactly what is on your roof. We buy the wire, we cut it, we test it before it leaves the shop, and we store it in our own facility between seasons. When a homeowner hands us a mixed pile of sets from three different years and two different stores, we have no idea what condition that wire is in. Warranting it would be a guess, and we do not make promises we cannot keep.

2. Retail light sets are built for temporary use, not a full Illinois winter

This surprises people. Seasonal decorative lighting in the United States is generally certified to the UL 588 safety standard, and that standard is written around products installed for a temporary period, meaning about 90 days or less at 120 volts. Retail sets are engineered to that expectation. They are not designed to sit through eight weeks of freeze and thaw cycles, ice loading on a north facing gutter line, and the wind that comes across open ground in Kankakee County in January.

The wire is the other issue. Professional stringer wire is typically 18 gauge SPT-1 or SPT-2, built to carry a real load across a long roofline. Many consumer mini light sets run on much thinner wire and carry strict limits on how many strands can be joined together. That is why the box tells you to connect only a few sets end to end. The moment somebody plugs a fourth strand in to reach the far corner of the garage, the display is being run outside what it was tested for.

3. Safety and liability are not paperwork problems

Holiday lighting is real electrical work performed on a ladder in cold weather. The Consumer Product Safety Commission has estimated roughly 14,700 holiday decorating injuries treated in emergency rooms during November and December in a single season, an average near 240 a day, and falls make up the largest share of them. On the fire side, the Office of the Illinois State Fire Marshal, citing NFPA data for 2018 through 2022, reports an average of 155 home fires a year that started with a Christmas tree, with electrical distribution or lighting equipment involved in more than two out of five of them, plus an estimated 853 home fires a year that began with other decorations.

We are licensed and insured, and our coverage is written around the work we control. That means our crew, our ladders, our methods, and our materials. An unknown light set with an unknown history sits outside that. If it fails on your fascia at two in the morning, the question of who is responsible gets very complicated very fast. Removing that variable is the cleanest protection for your home and for our team.

4. Pre-cut lengths never fit a real roofline

Store bought strands come in fixed lengths. Your house does not. That mismatch is why so many do it yourself displays have a dark gap over the front door and a bundle of extra lights dangling off the corner of the garage. We build every run from bulk stringer wire and cut it to your exact measurements, so the line stops where your roof stops. That is the whole point of custom cutting, and it is not possible with retail sets.

5. It costs you more, not less

Homeowners usually ask about this to save money, which makes sense. In practice it runs the other way. Installing customer owned lights means testing every strand, diagnosing dead sections, driving to a store mid install for a replacement, and coming back to troubleshoot failures that we did not cause. All of that is billable labor. Meanwhile our packages fold the lights, the design, the maintenance, the takedown, and the storage into one seasonal price, and the lights get replaced on our dime as they age. Over three or four seasons the all inclusive route is almost always the cheaper one, and it is definitely the calmer one.

So What Do I Do With The Lights I Already Have?

Nobody wants to hear that a purchase they already made is not going to get used. A few honest suggestions:

If you want the roofline handled but you are not ready to commit to a full seasonal package this year, tell us anyway. We would rather talk through the options honestly than sell you something that does not fit. You can also look at permanent RGB lighting, which stays on the house year round and gets rid of the seasonal install question entirely.
