A Day on the Road: Roof Soft Wash, Gutter Cleaning, and Oil Stain Removal Across Kankakee County

Green Pro Services · Clifton, Bourbonnais & Kankakee, IL

One day, three towns, three different jobs. This is a real look at how the Green Pro Services crew moves across Kankakee County and gets results on the surfaces homeowners care about most.

Some days on the truck stay simple. This one did not. We started in Clifton, worked our way to Bourbonnais, and finished in Kankakee, and every stop asked for a different skill and a different approach. Here is how the day played out.

Stop One: Roof Soft Wash in Clifton, IL

Our first client in Clifton called about dark streaks running down the shingles. Those black streaks come from a hardy algae called Gloeocapsa magma, and they spread across roofs all over Illinois. Pressure washing a roof strips granules off the shingles and shortens the life of the roof, so we never blast a roof with high pressure.

We use a soft wash instead. Soft washing applies a low pressure cleaning solution that kills the algae at the root and rinses clean, so the streaks lift away without damaging the shingles. The before and after on this Clifton roof speaks for itself.

Watch it happen. The short below shows the dark streaks before, the soft wash process, and the clean result on this Clifton roof.

Stop Two: Gutter Cleaning in Bourbonnais, IL

Next we drove north to Bourbonnais for a gutter cleaning. Clogged gutters push water where it does not belong, and that water finds fascia, soffit, and foundation. This job had all the usual suspects packed in the troughs: shingle grit, matted leaves, seed pods, and a thick layer of roof runoff sludge.

Then we found something we did not expect. Buried in the debris was a boomerang. We have pulled toys, tennis balls, and frisbees out of gutters before, but this was a first. It came out, the gutters got flushed clean, and the downspouts flowed the way they should again.

Stop Three: Oil Stain Removal in Kankakee, IL

Our last stop took us to Kankakee for a stubborn oil stain on a client's concrete. Oil soaks into the pores of concrete, so a quick rinse never touches it. You need a degreaser built to pull hydrocarbons out of the surface.

For this one we reached for F9 Double Eagle from Craig Harrison. Double Eagle is a concentrated degreaser and neutralizer that cuts through oil, tire marks, and food grease on concrete. We applied it, let it dwell, agitated the stain, and surface cleaned the area. The oil that had sat in that slab lifted right out.

Removing oil stains is also the first step before any concrete coating. A clean, degreased slab is what lets a coating bond and last, so this is a job we do often.

Roof Washing FAQs

Will soft washing damage my shingles?

No. Soft washing uses low pressure and a cleaning solution to kill algae at the root. It cleans the roof without stripping the protective granules the way high pressure washing does.

What are the black streaks on my roof?

Those streaks are algae called Gloeocapsa magma. It feeds on the limestone filler in shingles and spreads across the north facing slopes first. A soft wash removes it and slows how fast it returns.

How long does a roof soft wash last?

A soft wash keeps a roof clean far longer than pressure washing because it kills the algae rather than just knocking it loose. Most roofs stay clear for years, depending on shade and tree cover.

Do you clean roofs across Kankakee and Will County?

Yes. We soft wash roofs throughout Kankakee County and Will County, including Clifton, Bourbonnais, Kankakee, Bradley, Manteno, and the surrounding towns.
